1. General English for All levels

Course Description

Our General English courses are for Beginners through Intermediate to High skill levels. They are for students who want to enhance and develop their English skills for work, study, immigration, or social activity.

The program combines in-person and virtual instruction for a variety of learning styles. Audiovisual and interactive exercises allow you to learn and engage with different resources and achieve your learning goals.

What to Expect

Students complete a Placement Test and a Speaking Test with an instructor to ensure that you are assigned the appropriate level for studies and advancement.

As a student, you will:

  • Learn through a variety of styles from our Certified English Language Instructors

  • Participate and engage while focusing on the four skills – listening, speaking, reading, and writing

  • Attend courses that cover grammar, writing skills and pronunciation

  • Work together with fellow students through role-play, discussions, presentations, assignments, and much more in a fun-filled and group-based class environment.

From Classroom to Life

Our instructors use Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) levels to guide learning and progress for each student and the equivalent Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Our students attend courses that use real-world examples and Portfolio-Based Language Assessments that build long-term language skills. Group projects help build teamwork and leadership skills.

2. IELTS Test Preparation

Course Description

Students develop proficient skills in four areas – listening, speaking, reading, and writing – and gain the knowledge required to pass the IELTS successfully.

Our courses empower you to engage in the admissions process for Anderson College or other colleges and universities in Canada, complete Immigration and Citizenship applications, and in meeting Professional Licensing requirements.

What to Expect

The IELTS course is designed to prepare students for IELTS and to maximize IELTS exposure with Advanced IELTS classes.

Each course provides personalized test preparation with expert IELTS trainers as well as regular mock tests in the four skill areas – listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

As a student, you will:

  • Understand recording and listening to detailed information, recognize the opinions and attitudes of speakers, and the purpose of the communication

  • Achieve fluency and coherency, learn vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation, all focused on ensuring your English proficiency exceeds the standards

  • Read for general meaning, main ideas, understand inferences and implied meaning, and recognize the writer’s opinions

  • Organize, present, and compare data in writing, describe the stages of a process or procedure, describe an object or sequence of events and present and justify opinions.

Through virtual classes and assignments, delivered by Certified English Language Instructors, you will learn the skills required for test success.

3. English Conversation Café

Course Description

Class sizes are limited to enable active participation and the opportunity to engage in dialogue.

What to Expect

Students are guided through several topics by an instructor. Speaking exercises from English Assessment Tests will be added during the Café as help.

As a student, you will experience:

  • Working in pairs and small groups to complete speaking tasks

  • The first weekly lesson, that focuses on listening and speaking skills in a social context. (Lessons add print and audiovisual media to engage learners and start discussion.)

  • The second weekly lesson, designed to further develop the speaking skills necessary to succeed in oral examinations and provides strategies

  • The opportunity to practice responding to sample questions and topics that you may encounter.

From Classroom to Life

Interesting discussions focus on real-world situations including work and career studies. Through conversations, you will develop a job interview technique and the skills necessary to achieve your career goals. Guided by an instructor, you will learn alongside fellow students and increase your language fluency as you improve on the transferable skills needed to succeed professionally and personally.

Options

  • General English Program (ESL): Students who are evaluated at Level 12 or below, will start in the General English Program

  • English for Academic Purpose (EAP): Students who achieved IELTS 5.5 (writing above 5.0) or are evaluated at Level 13 or above, will start in the EAP Program
